A group of firms, including Cisco Systems, Bosch and BNY Mellon, have set up a new blockchain consortium designed to experiment how the technology can be interwoven with the Internet of Things (IoT).

Other members of the group include Foxconn Technology, Gemalto and blockchain startups Consensus, BitSE and Chronicled. The creation of a shared blockchain protocol is the aim – one which would shore up the security flaws that hackers could exploit in an interconnected system like IoT.

“We are seeing tremendous potential for the application of blockchain in industrial use cases,” says Dirk Slama, Chief Alliance Officer at Bosch Software Innovations. “Being able to create a tamperproof history of how products are manufactured, moved and maintained in complex value networks with many stakeholders is a critical capability.”
