As you have probably noticed, the IoT is bringing intelligence into more everyday objects. German-based manufacturing chain, Schaeffler, has partnered with IBM’s Watson IoT group to now create cognitive ball bearings.

Schaeffler specializes in developing high-precision ball bearings for mobility components and systems. The size range of the ball bearings ranges from tiny to very large bearings used in wind turbines. Industries in which Schaeffler contributes to include automotive, transportation, aviation and aerospace. If we narrow down the actual use of the bearings, you will find them in the chassis and transmissions of electric and hybrid vehicles, high-speed trains, aircraft aerospace applications.

The strategic partnership between IBM and Schaeffler intends to augment its entire operations with Watson’s cognitive intelligence. Using IBM’s cloud and Watson IoT technologies, Schaeffler will connect and transform every aspect of its business from its supply chain, through to manufacturing, sales and after-sales service.

The primary focus starts with transforming where this will happen within the supply chain. The initial component Schaeffler deploys, called bearings, will be adapted with digitally enabled-sensors in addition to the bearings’ standard functionalities. The application of this technology is possible through Schaeffler’s newly created tooling machine, named Industry 4.0.

The tooling machine is installed with sensors programmed with intelligence to measure torque, speed, and even temperature. The information or data recorded from the sensors allows Schaeffler to measure machine behavior, therefore providing the knowledge necessary to make safety changes and improvements. Watson IoT technologies will support Schaeffler in obtaining and producing real-time data results from components and systems, optimization of production processes, networking, and most importantly, increasing the reliability of mobility.
